Description
Marine Biodiversity dataset focused primarily on the South Georgia shelf and slope, collated from a comprehensive review of literature spanning over 125 years. Dataset encompasses 21,500 records, 1,800 species from 22 Phyla. Prepared by the British Antarctic Survey, NERC. more
The South Georgia Marine Biodiversity Dataset is the product of an extensive review of over 125 years of research at South Georgia. It forms part of a larger project sponsored by the UK Government through the Darwin Initiative, DEFRA. Its focus is predominantly on benthic species and includes over 21,500 records of ~ 1,800 species. The presence of species is recorded by latitude, longitude, and max/min depth. The dataset forms the most complete baseline measure of marine biodiversity at South Georgia ever undertaken. The projects status remains in progress with many thousands of samples collected by the British Antarctic Survey and their research partners (Government of South Georgia and South Sandwich Island & Shallow Marine Surveys Group, Falklands) yet to be cataloged and digitised. An overview of the project is availiable at the projects webpage: www.antarctica.ac.uk/sgmarbase/
