Revealed by the powerful lights of a trawl-mounted camera, these elegant solitary sea-squirts, or tunicates, stand half a metre high on the sea bed, 200 m below the surface of the sea off Terre Adélie. They were photographed during the Collaborative East Antarctic Marine Census (CEAMARC) voyage to the Southern Ocean earlier this year. Toxicological investigations in the Argentine Islands Region is detected the raised contents in water, soils and hydrobionts of a series of heavy metals with different toxicity (Ryasintseva and al., 1998, Samyshev, Kopytov, 2007). During the complex monitoring, founded by us around the Ukrainian Antarctic station, the curious phenomenon is revealed. The established early high contents of heavy metals in water and especially in suspended matter in the Region is obliged to the presence of them in soil of practically all investigated islands of the Archipelago as a result of washing-off. Formation of «bouillon» from the broad spectrum of these natural pollutants is caused by accumulation of them by hydrobionts, especially intensive by macrophytes and zoobenthos of the coastal water area. The revealed phenomenon is interest of subsequent researches of physiological features at the organisms-accumulators of pollutants and mechanisms of their adaptation. On the basis of complex experimental and field observations in the Atlantic sector of Antarctic Region the features of transformation of trophic structure in a plankton at different scenarios related to a different abundance of krill and salps and different degree of maturity of planktonic community in the whole are considered. Among heterotrophs in all considered situations the dominant functional role belonged to krill, salps and bacterioplankton. Relationship between the food requirements of the first and the seconds depending on their abundance varied on the order in one or another side. Thus intensive introduction of salps in the basis of natural habitat of krill not always was accompanied by the origin of deficit of food for them. This circumstance connected to intensity of meridional transfer of waters, probably, is an original damper for negative transformation – at least in present-day conditions . The interest to salps is caused by their abundance and certainly large role in the Antarctic Ecosystem, which is displayed at significant increase of number especially. In the spring 1998 and 2002 at first the distinction in levels of respiration at solitary (oozoids) and aggregated (blastozoids) forms of S. thompsoni are revealed. The both forms displayed similar daily rhythm of respiration rate. Irrespective of individual body mass, under density of settlement of animals in experimental vessels equal 3 g wet mass * l -1, their daily average values of energetic metabolism have made 79,5 ¼g O2* g-1*h-1 at oozoids and 41,5 ¼g O2* g-1*h-1 at blastozoids or 125 % and 61 % of body carbon contents per day correspondingly. Also In 2002 we carried out the measurements of rations of salps by radiocarbon method. During 2-4 hours rations linearly increased with increasing of algae concentration (0,2-2,3 mg C *l-1), from 0,3 % up to 70 % of body carbon contents per day irrespective of body mass of salps in the range 2,1-16,4 g.
